Perhaps more so than any other animal kept as pets, rabbits are many things to many people - a source of food and fur, a garden pest, a child's pet or, to an increasing number of people, an intelligent and affectionate companion animal.  Thanks to organisations such as The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund, The House Rabbit Society and campaigns such as Burgess's Rabbit Awareness Week, awareness of rabbit welfare issues has increased greatly in recent years.  This change in public perception, coupled with advances in medicine, has led to many rabbits leading longer, happier lives.  There is still a long way to go, however, before rabbits take their rightful place next to cats and dogs as legitimate household pets who deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
