Veterinary treatment remains moderately expensive and should your rabbit require medical attention for any reason, having protection in place to pay the resulting bills will provide you with peace of mind...

Bunnies can be small bundles of fun; furry and playful, they make a great addition to your family.  At times however, they can be a cause of concern and worry – particularly if they fall ill or are unlucky enough to have an accident. Keeping a rabbit therefore comes with a certain amount of responsibility as well as reward.

To protect the health of your rabbit there are simple steps you can take such as making sure they get enough exercise and feeding them an age appropriate diet.  You should also have your pet vaccinated and keep their living space clean to try and protect them from parasites.  Care and attention can go a long way toward ensuring your rabbit has a long and happy life, but there is also some planning needed.

Veterinary treatment remains moderately expensive and should your rabbit require medical attention for any reason, having protection in place to pay the resulting bills will provide you with peace of mind.  Rabbit insurance is provided by both general insurers and specialists and policiescan be tailored to the needs of you and your pet, with the ability to add on extras, or take the minimum level of cover.

You may choose to pay your insurance on a monthly or annual basis, allowing you to budget for any potential problems that may arise in advance.  This means should the worst happen you will not be forced to raise the full cost of any treatment under pressure, which can add considerable stress to what can be a potentially emotional situation.  When taking out your insurance be sure to check for any exclusions on what you can claim for such as neutering, or commonly occurring teeth problems, and be sure to check if there is an upper limit you can claim for treatment.  Armed with this information you may want to make separate financial provision to cover exemptions.

Although it should go without saying that skimping on your rabbit insurance will usually prove to be false economy, you can bank some savings on your bunny protection by being shopping-savvy.  Many insurers give discounts if you buy your policy online or if you insure more than one pet.  They also usually look favourably upon rabbit owners who have their pets micro-chipped, so it may be worth investigating if you are entitled to a reduction in your policy if your pet is protected in this way.
