Description
Coccidiosis is a disease that affects other animals, usually dogs, as well as rabbits. It is caused by microscopic parasites that live in the intestine and is transmitted by direct contact with infected animals or their urine, faeces, bedding or water.
Symptoms
- diarrhoea
- rapid weight loss
- bloated stomach
- rough coat
- tremors
Prevention / Treatment
Infected rabbits should be isolated and their living quarters thoroughly cleaned with disinfectant.
It is diagnosed through stool sample analysis. If caught at an early stage, coccidiosis can be treated but the stomach lining may be permanently damaged, affecting the rabbit's ability to ingest nutrients. It is usually fatal.
