Description
Fleas are uncommon in rabbits but they can also be infected by dog or cat fleas. Fleas must be treated swiftly as they can carry the myxomatosis virus which is potentially fatal if the rabbit is not vaccinated.
Symptoms
- persistent scratching, usually around head and neck area
- shaking of head and ears
- dark spots on skin or coat
Prevention / Treatment
There is a drop-on treatment now available for rabbits called "Advantage".
The rabbit's hutch must be thoroughly disinfected and all bedding removed and destroyed. For indoor rabbits, the entire house must be disinfected and all animals living in the house treated for fleas.
